I was taught when I started flying 727s that when taxiing on the ramp, you don't look forwards, you look sideways with your feet on the brakes and you jump on them if anything looks funny. You don't need to be as vigilant on a taxiway but you still need to be alert. A380 pilots are probably keenly aware of wingtip clearance issues, so this probably comes down to some kind of distraction.
